Register a .com Domain in Minutes: The Correct Order of Steps

    In three lines

    • A .
    • Say the name out loud on an imaginary phone call.
    • Availability is not a reservation.

A .com is the fastest thing to buy in business technology: no commercial registration required, no document review, no waiting period. That speed makes people careless, and carelessness in the first hour creates problems that last years. This is the order we follow for every client.

Step 1 — Choose a name people can type

Say the name out loud on an imaginary phone call. If the other person has to ask how it is spelled, choose another. Avoid hyphens, doubled letters and numbers. Keep it under fifteen characters where you can.

    • One obvious spelling in Latin letters
    • No hyphens, no digits, no doubled letters
    • Check the two most likely misspellings too

Step 2 — Register before you tell anyone

Availability is not a reservation. Between checking a name and paying for it, the name can be gone. Register first, then discuss it with the team, the designer and the printer.

Create the registrar account with a company email address — never a personal Gmail belonging to an employee who may leave.

Step 3 — Lock it the same hour

Three switches, sixty seconds, years of protection: registrar lock, WHOIS privacy and auto-renew. Most domain disasters we are called to fix trace back to one of these three being off.

    • Registrar lock stops unauthorised transfers
    • WHOIS privacy reduces spam and targeted fraud
    • Auto-renew with a valid card prevents the worst outage of all

Step 4 — Configure DNS and email before launch

Point the website records, add the mail records for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, then publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Send a test message to an outside address and confirm it arrives in the inbox, not the spam folder, before your first campaign.

Step 5 — Write it down

One page: registrar, account email, registrant details, expiry date, DNS records and who to call. Store it where the finance team can find it, not only the technical one. Domains are lost by organisations, not by technology.

    The practical takeaway

Search, register immediately, lock within the hour, configure DNS and email before launch, and document it on one page. Done properly, the whole thing takes less than a working day.
